Californy!

So here we are. Huddled around a small, dimly lit whiskey table in an RV park in Trinidad, CA, our home for the night of day 9 of Cycle for a Cause, each ‘mac-ing off,’ no one speaking a single word. Each morning is cold and coastal moist, muscles rigid and tired we push into another 60, 70, 80, however many miles makes sense for the day. As reports come in from Colorado, Tahoe, Utah, anywhere there’s a half inch of snow and a bunch of really excited kids we hear how sick the ski day was, how “the season is really starting to look good, bro,” there is really nothing farther from our minds. The next pedal push makes more sense to think about. The next stand of trees tall enough to base jump out of, the next salty taste of ocean wind around the next corner…
Sleeping under the stars each night in places dark enough to actually see the milky way takes your breath from you like a disciplinary father taking away the TV remote. I still haven’t gotten it back. I have, after 9 days on the road, come to terms with the fact that there is really no way to describe the thoughts and feelings that accompany eight hours pedaling by beaches, through fishing towns half asleep, over redwood scattered hillsides, and all with one goal in mind. Don’t break. Make it. Keep pushing. Already to California, San Diego still seems like half a world from here. A part of me can’t wait to get there, but most of me is in love with this road. With all of the things that it has shown me. With the lessons that my bike has been trying to teach me all along, and only now have I taken the quiet moment to listen.
With the coming morning’s push out of this small town RV stop another horde of new sights, sounds, places, and people will carry us on to the next wing.
Thank you all for checking in! I’ll talk to you again soon!
